Dormers

The face of the house is forever changed by the addition of two fine dormers. Sam tried to spoil it for me by likening the new façade to an unsmiling face—he can just be that way sometimes. But even on his bad-mood days, he's always the craftsman. He was careful to mirror the new dormers to the one on the barn. It looks nicely in keeping, one carpenter’s nod to another, separated by 109 years.

Inside, the new windows will add morning light to the bedrooms, a joy for an early riser like me. To preserve the beam that runs the length of the house, the windows are high on the wall. This takes your eyes up into branches of the maple and the sky above or forces you to stand on tiptoe to look down to the road—either way makes you feel like a kid. Makes me happy.
