Floor Pour

After many weather-caused delays, the garage floor was finally poured this morning. A slow drizzle at 8:30 made Clarke nervous, but he went ahead with the delivery and the skies held out for us. A team from Saunders dropped of 12 yards of concrete in two loads. By the time I arrived, they were scraping down the trough, hoping to have just enough.

I’d never seen how the surface was leveled and it was fascinating to watch: the workers up to their shins in a concrete bog, running the screed across the surface and trowelling the top smooth. This will make a great work surface for the crew and soon, a safe spot to store deliveries.

It’s hard to descibe what having a garage will mean unless you live in a climate like ours. When the snow is up to your waist, having a sheltered place to park and unload is a great relief and a wonderful luxury.

When we moved, we left behind a narrow driveway overhung by our neighbor’s roof. Each winter, enormous icicles grew precariously from the drip edge. We’d scurry past on our way inside, fearfully aware that they could come crashing down at any time. Bye bye that! Can hardly wait for the snug new digs for our cars.
