Excavation
The excavation for the addition and garage footings began over a week ago but was delayed with all the rain we’ve had. It’s encouraging that we will soon pour footings and that Clark will be finished with his big roofing project and can concentrate on Foster Road.
The bulkhead was removed because the addition will extend across the opening. The inside door was painted a whimsical purple that still shows above the new block wall. The sensible, old-fashioned practice of having a large exterior utility entrance to the basement was a good one. Someday I’ll wish it was still here I’m sure.
Most exciting to this future farmer is the soil profile that has been exposed. I’ve included a close-up glamour shot of the marble-cake swirls of color that pervades the excavation. The texture is unlike the soils I’ve experienced in the past which have been mostly clay and would have been destroyed by the rains. This has a great blend of fine silty sand and enough clay to hold it all together. It’s held up well but not crusted over. Thrilling!
