Grand Stairs
A new main staircase is an addition to the original plan that will make the entry hall, and our daily lives, much more gracious. The old stairs were solid, but descended to an awkward point right in front of what will now be the main guest entrance. I could just see people tripping over the bottom stair. Ruin the mood. Lawsuits. Not good.
The new stairs are even more sturdy, and the landing is shifted so the entrance is unobstructed. In time, the stairs will be finished with black walnut from our lumbered tree and newel posts will be made from the same wood.
The crew left an unexpected porcelain water feature to grace the landing. No, the toilet will not be permanent, but for now it, um, serves a purpose for the crew and so it will remain until the new fixtures are in place.
Sam is very experienced in staircase construction and we discussed many options before settling on the final design. One stunning idea had the landing spilt into two directions, but had to be rejected because space was needed for something else. Darn refrigerator. Hate it when necessity gets in the way of beauty.
