Thoughts and images from life at Foster Road

Breakthrough

After days of teardown, the opening of two walls has changed everything downstairs. The wall between the bathroom and kitchen and the wall that closed off the main  staircase have been removed. N ow the full volume of space can be experienced, and it’s wonderful. But this beautiful sight also has me second guessing all my interior plans.

Foster Road, like the house I’m leaving in the city, was built to hold as many rooms as possible—and for smaller people with fewer clothes. Fewer dishes. Fewer foodstuffs. You get the picture. Anyone who has lived in such a space knows how irritating it can be to navigate through doors that must be closed so other doors can open and corners that can barely be turned holding a basket of laundry. The kitchen I’m leaving is just over 100 square feet and has six doors. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved this house and made many a fabulous meal in my efficient little kitchen. Though I’m ready for an open floorplan, I don’t want to emulate those vast and boring suburban “great rooms.”

I can’t wait for Saturday early morning when I will sit with a cup of coffee in the middle of my dusty floor and ponder again my delicious options.
