New Space from Old
The work of gutting the old to make way for the new continues. I went out to the house before the crew arrived today to spend some quiet time with the place. Upstairs the old light fixtures were left on the floor, felted with plaster dust. The morning light came in through the tarps and boards and the space was quite lovely.
The upstairs deconstruction has been mostly completed and the hand-hewn beams are gorgeous. I’ll use them in the downstairs addition. When the tarp is open and the full view out back can be seen, it’s stunning. There are phases during construction that can only be enjoyed for a moment. The view will never be as grand once the walls fill in. I’m glad to have experienced it.
Sam, the carpenter, has a tidier technique for demolition than was used to take down the upstairs partitions. The walls are cut into sections then removed in large pieces. Clearly the day’s work ended on the first floor with walls half removed and left holding their own in interesting angles, a newfangled patchwork that won’t be here ever again.
