Walnut Wood

This morning I hurried out to the farm before an early meeting. From a distance, the landscape was transformed by the absence of the towering walnut. Behind the house there was now only a low stump where the tree once stood. Sadly, I did not have time to count the rings. Perhaps this weekend I can find the matching log and tally up the years. Today the stump will be ground out so I can regain the level area for the planned addition to the house.

The wood was stacked neatly and an ample pile of mulch was left by the side of the house, already steaming as it turns to compost. But this mulch must be used carefully. The walnut family of trees contain juglone, a chemical that inhibits the germination and growth of other plants. I will use it where I don’t want anything to grow—wherever that may be!

Now I need to find a sawyer who can cut the straight logs into lumber. I don’t know what the final yield may be as many of the branches are twisted, but it does not matter much. I will have some wood to use in the house in memory of this fine tree, and some to share with the Sweet family. Looking at the mountain of dark-chocolate wood, I feel wildly wealthy.
