Thoughts and images from life at Foster Road

Eureka! This week Marge sent me a  photo of the house circa 1940, the year her family bought the property. She also sent their abstract which shows that the house first officially changed hands in 1864 for the respectable sum of $800. The size of the property is unchanged to this day, but the house is much different from its earlier look.

I’m not a big fan of things Victorian—too often fussy, cloyingly sentimental, and prettified. But somehow it’s the perfect style for this house. The scale of the siding and the detail of the open porch all make proportional good sense. This gift from Marge is inspirational!

The family dog, Mike, is seen resting comfortably in the grass and a basket of eggs rests on the front porch. The photo must have been taken from a wildflower meadow acros the gravel road. And that same maple still grows in front of the house!

A second front door is plain to see—and has a story behind it. According to the family historian, the door was added by a former resident, a woman who wrote children’s books in the living room (or “parlor” in the parlance of the day). She apparently had the door added so she could let her cat in and out while sitting at her desk. Having my own spoiled pets I can appreciate her decision.

The black and white photo gives a nice sense of the details that went into the original house, but not it’s undoubtedly rich color scheme. So I played with the colors and settled, for now, on a few options. Green—as always for me—is in the lead but surprisingly, dusty rose is not far behind. I will have to check to see if anyone in the family remembers the color from the early days.
